In today’s spotlight:
Ruben Deurhof – functional support consultant, gamer and would-be cohabitant
Consultant in Training
Ruben is the youngest member of QS Solutions. He started just over six months ago as a service desk employee but has a clear goal in mind: to become a consultant! This means he spends every free minute during work hours earning the necessary Microsoft certifications. And he’s doing well: he has already passed the first two with flying colors!
“All the time to earn certifications during work hours”
Ruben usually works from home, which allows him to easily combine work and study. Currently, he still lives with his parents in Lelystad, but in the new year, he plans to actively search for a house to buy for him and his girlfriend. “Renting is a waste of money,” he believes.
Problem Solver
In his current role, Ruben has a lot of customer contact, mainly regarding CRM-related questions. QS Solutions provides CRM solutions to both healthcare and business clients. Since most of the solutions are custom-made, the questions that come into the service desk are very diverse!
Ruben enjoys solving problems for customers and does everything he can to achieve this. As soon as he receives a request, he gets to work on it right away. Sometimes he can solve it himself, and in other cases, he escalates it to a more experienced colleague.
“Increasingly Involved in Projects””
In addition to his work on the service desk, Ruben is also increasingly involved in projects. He writes manuals and makes system adjustments. He enjoys this because it fits perfectly with his training path to becoming a consultant!
Translating Customer Needs into Products
What Ruben likes about working at the service desk is that he can actually help customers solve a problem. The appreciation that comes with it is gratifying. At the same time, he looks forward to his future role as a consultant because what he enjoys most is translating customer needs into a product and tinkering with a system to deliver custom solutions. That’s when he’s truly in his element.
Ruben learned the communication skills so important in customer contact not only during his studies but also during (part-time) jobs in retail, particularly in the high-end men’s fashion segment. How do you interact with customers? How do you approach them? How do you build a dialogue? These are skills that aren’t always natural but are essential in dealing with customers!
Balancing Computers and Movement
A passion for computers developed early on. As a little boy, Ruben would sit on his father’s lap while he was gaming. He enjoys gaming himself (“I learned more English through gaming than at school!” he says) and also regularly tinkers with computers. He even built one himself!
Despite this, Ruben maintains a good balance between a sedentary lifestyle and physical activity. Until a few years ago, he was an avid korfball player, but nowadays, if possible, he turns off his laptop at five o’clock to go to the gym with his best friend. He not only finds this fun but also good for his health. In the evening, he might go for a ride on his longboard or spend time with his girlfriend or friends, gaming or watching Netflix together.
Ruben on QS Solutions
“Working at QS Solutions is the opposite of what I expected ‘adult life’ to be! I always thought there would be much more hierarchy in companies, that it would be much stricter. Just working from 9 to 5, with little flexibility or freedom. Fortunately, QS Solutions is completely different!
“The appreciation I get here feels great”
It’s really wonderful to work here. You get a lot of freedom, and there’s a relaxed atmosphere. I was allowed to create my own development plan and have all the time to earn certifications during work hours. It’s nice to keep making progress. I’m increasingly able to answer customer questions on my own without needing a colleague’s help.
Recently, I had a meeting with my manager, and they were full of praise for how things are going and what I’m doing. That kind of appreciation feels great!”
